WORKSHOP “ENHANCING MULTILATERAL COORDINATION IN STOPPING/LIMITING THE USE OF WILDLIFE PRODUCTS IN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN THUA THIEN HUE PROVINCE”
The workshop was organized to report the survey results on the use of wildlife products at Traditional Medicine practice facilities in Hue city, while also creating a forum to share information on the current situation, experiences in reduction, and suitable alternative measures. The organizers hope this will be a space for dialogue between experts, management agencies, and the Traditional Medicine community towards a consensus on limiting, and eventually completely stopping, the use of wildlife products in treatment, contributing to the conservation of endangered species and compliance with current laws.

The workshop “Enhancing multilateral coordination in stopping/limiting the use of wildlife products in Traditional Medicine in Thua Thien Hue province” was held on August 11, 2023, organized by CHOICE in collaboration with the Faculty of Traditional Medicine - Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. This was an activity within the cooperation program between the two parties, which included a survey on the actual use of wildlife products at Traditional Medicine facilities and a workshop to report the results, share experiences, and discuss alternative measures.
The workshop was attended by representatives from many departments and Traditional Medicine practitioners and doctors. The discussion focused on the challenges in changing the habit of using wildlife, the role of patients and doctors, alternative medicinal options, and the need for scientific research to prove the effectiveness of these alternatives.
Many delegates also shared their personal views and practical experiences in using or transitioning away from medicinal ingredients from wildlife, such as using pig trotters instead of pangolin scales, using water buffalo horn instead of rhino horn, or using ancient remedies in postpartum treatment. The workshop concluded with a commitment signing ceremony by the delegates, showing consensus in reducing and moving towards ending the use of wildlife products in Traditional Medicine, contributing to the conservation of endangered species locally.
